Jefferson County Historical Society and History Center [Pennsylvania]

Description

The Jefferson County History Center provides research facilities,
exhibits, & public programs relating to Jefferson County's history, as
well as serving as the primary Visitor Center for the 15-county Lumber
Heritage Region. We are open Wednesday through Saturday from 12 pm to
5 pm.

The center offers exhibits and educational and recreational events.

Three Lakes Historical Society and Museum [WI]

Description

The Three Lakes Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the history of Three Lakes and all of northeastern Wisconsin. The society owns and operates a museum, which features artifacts and memorabilia from the Three Lakes region along with a restored log cabin. The cabin serves as a historic house museum where visitors can gain an appreciation for pioneer life in the northern midwest.

Pacific Northwest Truck Museum [OR]

Description

"In the Pacific Northwest Truck Museum, you will see some of the great working vehicles that developed the Pacific Northwest. These wonderfully restored antique trucks, parts and memorabilia also show the significant and unique innovations in the development of trucks brought about by the longer distances and rough terrain of this part of the country." In addition to the large collection of trucks, the museum offers an annual antique truck show.

Sarasota Classic Car Museum [FL]

Description

One of the oldest car museums in the world, according to its website, the Sarasota Classic Car Museum holds over 100 automobiles, including makes from almost every manufacturer to compete in the United States car market, spanning over 100 years. In addition to vehicles, the museum houses a small arcade of antique games.

The museum offers exhibits, an antique games arcade, and tours for school groups. The website offers an events calendar, visitor information, and information about the other services offered by the museum.

Lexington Historical Society [MA]

Description

"The Lexington Historical Society in Lexington, Massachusetts preserves and celebrates Lexington's history, with a special emphasis on the town's important role in the beginning of the American Revolution." The society manages three historic house museums, the Hancock-Clarke House, which was Paul Revere's destination in Lexington during his famous midnight ride, Buckman Tavern, the gathering place for the Lexington Militia on April 19, 1775, and the Munroe Tavern, which served as the temporary British headquarters during the British retreat from Concorde to Boston. All of these locations have been restored so that visitors can experience the locations exactly as they were at the beginning of the American Revolution. In addition to the museums, the society maintains a historical archive and puts on a variety of educational programs.

Discovery Museum [CA]

Description

"The Discovery Museum of Sacramento is a family-focused educational institution dedicated to enriching the lives of local residents and visitors to the Sacramento Region by encouraging the exploration of history, science, and space." The museum is split into two entities, the Challenger Learning Center, which is an interactive space mission simulator which consists of a realistic Mission Control Center and spacecraft, and the Science and Space Center, which is a traditional museum focusing on scientific discovery. The Challenger Learning Center is primarily a children's educational center, and is only open to public groups by appointment. The Science and Space Center features a variety of exhibits, including live animals and a planetarium.

Fort Tejon State Historic Park [CA]

Description

Fort Tejon is located in the Grapevine Canyon, the main route between California's great central valley and Southern California. The fort was established to protect and control the Indians who were living on the Sebastian Indian Reservation, and to protect both the Indians and white settlers from raids by the Paiutes, Chemeheui, Mojave, and other Indian groups of the desert regions to the southeast. Fort Tejon was first garrisoned by the United States Army on August 10, 1854 and was abandoned ten years later on September 11, 1864. There are restored adobes from the original fort, and the park's museum features exhibits on army life and local history.

The park offers exhibits, tours, educational programs, living history events, and other recreational and educational events.

Appanoose County Historical & Coal Mining Museum [IA]

Description

The Appanoose County Historical & Coal Mining Museum is located in the old post office in Centerville, Iowa. The museum features a variety of exhibits, including exhibits on coal mining, pioneer life, local businesses, the mormon trail, and the local American Indian population. The museum is open to the public every Sunday during the summer months and by appointment.

Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum [NY]

Description

The Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum is dedicated to preserving the history of the whaling industry, especially the history of the industry in the Long Island Area. The museum was opened in 1942, and offers an archive of historical documents in addition to the variety of exhibits that it puts on throughout the year. Finally, the museum also offers fully customizable educational programs, which can be adapted to classes of any age or level.

West Virginia State Museum / Cultural Center [WV]

Description

The West Virginia State Museum and Cultural Center opened in 1976 in order to showcase West Virginia's artistic, cultural, and historic heritage. While the lower level of the museum is presently closed for renovation, the upper floors are still open to the public, and visitors can view the art and history exhibits in the Art Gallery, the Lobby Gallery, and the Balcony Gallery. In addition, the State Archives Library and the offices of the Commission on the Arts and the State Historic Preservation Office are also housed in the museum.
