Hurricane Relief Fund

Description

Humanities Texas announces more than $50,000 in grants for Texas cultural and educational organizations recovering from Hurricanes Dolly, Gustav, and Ike.

Texas cultural and educational organizations may request grants of up to $2,000 for immediate needs resulting from the 2008 storms. Grants support collection replacement, conservation work, and professional consultation.

Libraries that suffered losses to their collections as a result of the hurricane may apply for grants of up to $2,000 to support collection development in such humanities fields as literature and history. Purchases may include books, media resources, and other educational materials.

The Academy: Innovative Humanities Resources to Reach and Teach History and Government

Description

The Academy offers educators content and strategies for teaching the "Seven Principles of Constitutionalism" and the "U.S. Constitution in Time of Crisis." Important events and decisions concerning equality in American history will also be studied. A team of talented scholars and consultants will present information and lessons dealing with TAKS Objectives One and Four. A variety of demonstrated lessons will incorporate multi-use visuals, music, and interactive strategies.

Humanities Texas Awards

Description

The Humanities Texas Awards recognize imaginative leadership in the humanities on a local, regional, or state level. In 2008, two awards will be presented: one for individual achievement, another for organizational achievement. Nominees might include a local library that has started an especially effective reading and lecture series; a group whose work has advanced heritage tourism efforts; or an individual who has developed a significant public program grounded in history, literature, philosophy, archaeology, folklore, or another humanities discipline. The winning individual and organization will each receive a cash award of $5,000.

Choices in Little Rock

Description

This workshop will explore the Facing History and Ourselves resource book, Choices in Little Rock—a collection of teaching suggestions, activities, and primary sources that focus on the desegregation of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1957. These efforts led to a crisis that historian Taylor Branch once described as "the most severe test of the Constitution since the Civil War." These resources explore a range of civic choices—the decisions people make as citizens in a democracy. Those decisions, both then and now, reveal that democracy is not a product but a work in progress, a work that is shaped in every generation by the choices that people make about themselves and others. In this workshop, participants will consider ways to engage students in the issues raised by this history and its civic implications for their lives today. Choices in Little Rock can be used not only to teach history but also to deepen and enrich a study of civics, government, and literature. Participants will receive the Choices in Little Rock teaching guide, which contains suggestions for lesson plans, reproducible readings, and copies of documents for students to analyze. Attending this workshop will also make teachers part of the Facing History and Ourselves Educator Network. This entitles them to free borrowing from FH's extensive Lending Library, full access to all of FH's Educator Resources, including lessons, teaching strategies, online modules, discussion forums, and more, as well as ongoing personalized curricular support from a Facing History staff member.

Description

Primarily Teaching is designed to provide access to the rich resources of the National Archives for educators at the upper elementary, secondary, and college levels. Participants will learn how to research the historical records, create classroom materials based on the records, and present documents in ways that sharpen students’ skills and enthusiasm for history, government, and the other humanities. Each participant will search the holdings of the National Archives for documents suitable for classroom use and develop strategies for using these documents in the classroom or design professional development activities to
help classroom teachers use primary source documents effectively.
