Google Earth lets students see the world around them in brand-new ways: travel to the Great Pyramids, analyze live current events, compare before and after images of deforestation, and integrate literature and social studies. But how best can teachers use it to improve learning? This workshop spends a day adapting existing Google Earth tours and creating new ones.
The Kansas Historical Society will host the annual Kansas Council for the Social Studies conference at the Kansas Historical Society Complex and Kansas Museum of History in Topeka, KS. This year's theme, "Kansas Social Studies: Contexts, Perspectives, and Practices," has attracted a number of high-quality presenters and vendors. Internationally known photographer Jim Richardson will deliver the keynote address. Conference sessions will feature presentations on innovative instructional strategies, primary sources, teaching and learning history (U.S. Kansas and the world), government, geography, economics, as well as integrated curriculum.
This workshop will "explore the clash of cultures and differing definitions of liberty that played out on the Missouri-Kansas border in the decade before the firing on Fort Sumter and throughout the Civil War. Workshop presenters and participants will consider the forces and events that precipitated “Bleeding Kansas” and led to the abandonment of the understandings reached in the Missouri Compromise, the rejection of popular sovereignty in the Kansas Territory, and the establishment of the shadow “Free State” government. They will also examine the nature and intensity of the struggles between the Kansas Jayhawkers and Missouri Bushwhackers during the Civil War and the general mayhem these vicious disputes and guerrilla activities engendered. Perspectives of gender, race, class and ideology will be examined and analyzed." The workshop will include examination of teaching resources, visits to historic sites, discussions, lectures, readings, and lesson planning; specific topics will include "Contested Visions of Freedom," "Fault Lines of Freedom: Slavery and Freedom on the Border," "Commerce at the Crossroads: The Conflict of Transition," "Conflicting Visions of Freedom: The Failure of Popular Sovereignty," "From Contention to Warfare: The Uncivil Society," and "The Border Wars in History and Memory."

Those wishing to receive 3 hours of graduate credit in History will need to complete a paper by the October 30 deadline. This workshop will use the Choices program's unit "To End All Wars: World War I and the League of Nations Debate" as a jumping-off point for discussing Woodrow Wilson's presidency, the League of Nations, and WWI, as well as how they may be taught.

A trip to Grinter Place offers a look inside the oldest home in Wyandotte County, as well as a step back to the days of frontier life along the Kansas and Missouri border. Overlooking the historic Delaware Crossing on the Kansas River, Grinter Place was the home to Annie and Moses Grinter. Annie, a Lenape (Delaware) Indian, helped to farm, raise poultry and livestock, and planted an apple orchard. Moses operated a ferry and a trading post, where he traded with the Lenape Indians.

To travelers on the Santa Fe Trail, this sandstone citadel marked the halfway point of the trail and was one of the most prominent landmarks on their long journey. Native Americans were said to have met at Pawnee Rock and reputedly used it as a vantage point to spot bison herds and approaching wagon trains. Visitors can stand atop Pawnee Rock while learning about the Santa Fe Trail, enjoy a picnic under the shaded pavilion, and contemplate the rich history of the Santa Fe Trail traders and the Pawnee Indians.
