El Rancho de Las Golondrinas [NM]

Description

This historic rancho, now a living history museum, dates from the early 1700s and was an important paraje, or stopping point, along the famous Camino Real, the Royal Road from Mexico City to Santa Fe, NM.

El Camino Real International Heritage Center [NM]

Description

The newest State Monument tells the fascinating story of more than three centuries of trade and commerce that traversed the trail, linking Spain, Mexico, and the United States at a time when mules, trains, and horses were the only means of land travel. The award-winning building is set amidst the pristine Chihuahuan Desert north of the Jornada del Muerto and houses an exhibit that takes visitors on a virtual journey along the historic trail from Zacatecas, Mexico to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Visitors can discover the indigenous people encountered by the Spanish and the impact the arrival of the Spanish had on the formation of New Mexico. Remnants of the early journey remain today in hand-hewn carts, tools, leather water jugs, and religious altars and objects that accompanied the travelers into the northern territory. Visitors experience the journeys of Native Americans, Spaniards, and Mexicans; the military fort period; and the first Anglo settlers from the Eastern United States, through first-person stories and the art and objects they brought with them.

Jémez State Monument [NM]

Description

The Jemez State Monument Heritage Area includes the stone ruins of a 500-year-old Indian village and the San José de los Jemez church dating to 1610. The village of Giusewa was built in the narrow San Diego Canyon by the ancestors of the present-day people of Jemez (walatowa) Pueblo. The name Giusewa refers to the natural springs in the area. In the 17th century, the Spanish established a Catholic mission at the village. The mission was short-lived, and, in time, the people abandoned the site and moved to the current location of Jemez Pueblo. The massive stone walls were constructed about the same time the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. The heritage center contains exhibitions that tell the story of the site through the words of the Jemez people. A 1,400-foot interpretive trail winds through the impressive site ruins.

The Electronic Schoolhouse/LaEscuela Electronica developed by the New York State Archives represents a major educational outreach to Spanish-language speakers.

The site focuses on using historical records—primary sources—as learning tools in elementary, middle, and secondary education. There's an English site and a Spanish site; and lesson plans, worksheets, and instructional videos are mirrored in both languages.

Primary source materials remain in their original language, organized by categories. The site enables the teacher to build a worksheet and then to edit and adapt that worksheet, selecting what information is needed to accompany the primary source material. Among seven worksheet options, the teacher might select captions, historical background of the primary source, questions, and resources.

Classroom teachers developed the content to correlate with the New York State Learning Standards with the goal of promoting critical thinking skills, reading and writing skills, and understanding historical content and context.

"The role of St. Augustine and Florida is often overlooked in the study of US colonial history, a study that often begins with the founding of Jamestown. Participants in this seminar explore the history and the cultures that created this fascinating colonial city. They examine the role the sea played in the city’s founding and development; the nature of the relationship between Spanish colonists and Native Americans; the role of the military in the founding, development, and everyday life of colonial Spanish St. Augustine; the influence of the Roman Catholic Church in shaping the colonial experience of the Spanish settlement; how women, native peoples, and people of color fit within the colonial social hierarchy. San Miguel Mission Chapel [NM]

Description

The oldest church still in use in the United States, this simple adobe structure was built in the early 17th century by the Tlaxcalan Indians of Mexico, who came to New Mexico as servants of the Spanish. Badly damaged in the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, the structure was restored and enlarged in 1710. On display in the chapel are priceless statues and paintings and the San Jose Bell, weighing nearly 800 pounds, which is believed to have been cast in Spain in 1356.
