Smithsburg Historical Society

Description

Organized in 1986, the Society strives to preserve the heritage of Smithsburg and the surrounding area, and to transmit it intact to future generations in an authentic and meaningful manner. In a larger context, the Society attempts to instill a sense of civic pride in all residents of the town through recognition of significant local contributions and achievements which began when the first settlement was founded in 1787.

High Plains Historical Society and Museum

Description

Visitors to the Society's Museum can learn about Nebraska's early pioneers and life on the American Prairie. The Museum offers displays on and including authentic pioneer artifacts from the 1870s, the history of the American Railroad, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and more. Political exhibits cover Senator George W. Norris and the three former Governors from McCook: Frank B. Morrison, Ralph G. Brooks, and U.S. Senator E. Benjamin Nelson. An extensive collection of photographs offers visitors a glance into Nebraska history.

Ker Place [VA]

Description

Ker Place is a circa 1800 Federal-style residence, now serving as a historic house museum. The museum provides information on the history of Virginia's Eastern shore.

The museum offers guided tours, an archaeology lab, period rooms, and history camps.

Senator John Heinz History Center [PA]

Description

The Heinz History Center consists of four separate historic institutions, the History Center, a library and archives, the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum, and the Meadowcroft Rockshelter and associated Prehistoric Indian Village. The History Center chronicles 250 years of Pittsburgh History, the Sports Museum showcases Pennsylvania sporting heroes, and the Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Prehistoric Indian Village give visitors a glimpse into the lives of humans in the first known site of human habitation in North America.
