Description

The New York State Historical Association was founded to help preserve and promote the early history of the state of New York. Today, the association runs the Fenimore Art Museum, which is located in Cooperstown, and a extensive research library, which is also located in Cooperstown, and features over 88,000 volumes pertaining to early New York and American history.

The association offers a variety of programs designed for schoolchildren, such as workshops, gallery tours, spring field days, curriculum resources for teachers, and the distance learning program, where museum educators create a "virtual trip" to association museums. Demuth Museum [PA]

Description

The Demuth Museum presents the life and art work of Charles Demuth (1883-1935), as well as his historic late 18th-century family home. Demuth developed the artistic style called Precisionism; and he primarily utilized watercolors and oils. Next door is the Demuth's tobacco shop, established 1770, making it the oldest tobacco shop in the United States. The shop operates as a retail business, and is not part of the museum.

Smithtown Historical Society [NY]

Description

The Smithtown Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Smithtown, New York, founded in 1665. To this end, the society operates and interprets a total of 14 historical buildings located within Smithtown.

The society offers exhibits and eight elementary education programs. Education programs meet state standards, and are only offered to Long Island students.

Brendan T. Byrne State Forest and Whitesbog Village [NJ]

Description

Whitesbog was an active 19th- and 20th-century cranberry- and blueberry-producing community. This company town was founded in the 1870s by Joseph J. White. The commercial high-bush blueberry was developed here by Elizabeth White. Once a thriving town and one of the largest cranberry farms in the state, the now silent village is an example of the changes in agriculture in this state.

Holland Land Office Museum [NY]

Description

The Holland Land Office Museum presents the history of Genesee County, New York. Topics covered include the Tonawanda Indian Reservation, the Seneca people, military history, and Victorian life. The collection contains approximately 16,000 artifacts—2,000 of which are available for viewing at a given time. The collection is supplemented by a series of temporary exhibits.

The museum offers exhibits, customizable tours, and more than 15 summer education programs. Reservations are required for tours.

The Susan B. Anthony House [NY]

Description

The Susan B. Anthony House presents the life and impact of Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906), one of the strongest voices for women's right to vote, abolition of slavery, and temperance. Anthony was closely involved with the political programs of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Frederick Douglass. The structure was Anthony's home between 1866 and 1906 and the site of her 1872 arrest for voting despite her sex. In addition to displaying Anthony's own possessions, the house offers an exhibit on women's suffrage.

The house offer exhibits, period rooms, lectures, tours, and an educational program on women's suffrage which meets state education standards. Groups of more than 12 require reservations.

Fenton History Center [NY]

Description

The Fenton History Center presents the history of Chautauqua County and Jamestown, New York. The center is housed in the 1863 Italian Villa-style mansion of Governor Reuben E. Fenton (1819-1885).

The center offers guided tours; self-guided tours; period rooms; research assistance; a research library; exhibits; a monthly history club with activities and field trips; and roughly 30 educational programs for students, available at the center or presented by an interpreter as outreach programming. The website offers web-exclusive exhibits. Reservations are required for guided tours and education programs.
