Smithsburg Historical Society

Description

Organized in 1986, the Society strives to preserve the heritage of Smithsburg and the surrounding area, and to transmit it intact to future generations in an authentic and meaningful manner. In a larger context, the Society attempts to instill a sense of civic pride in all residents of the town through recognition of significant local contributions and achievements which began when the first settlement was founded in 1787.

Trenton Battle Monument [NJ]

Description

The Trenton battle monument commemorates the American victory at the first Battle of Trenton, NJ, which occurred on December 26, 1776. It is located in an area of the city known as "Five Points." It was here, at the intersection of North Broad Street, Warren Street and Brunswick, Pennington and Princeton Avenue, that the American artillery was placed. From this vantage point, the artillery dominated the streets of Trenton, preventing the Hessian troops from organizing an effective counter attack.

Senator John Heinz History Center [PA]

Description

The Heinz History Center consists of four separate historic institutions, the History Center, a library and archives, the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum, and the Meadowcroft Rockshelter and associated Prehistoric Indian Village. The History Center chronicles 250 years of Pittsburgh History, the Sports Museum showcases Pennsylvania sporting heroes, and the Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Prehistoric Indian Village give visitors a glimpse into the lives of humans in the first known site of human habitation in North America.

Boxwood Hall [NJ]

Description

Built about 1750, Boxwood Hall became the residence of Elias Boudinot, president of the Continental Congress that ratified the Peace Treaty with Great Britain. George Washington visited his friend Boudinot in 1789 on his way to New York for his first inauguration.
