Hanover Junction Train Station [PA]

Description

The Hanover Junction Train Station is located in the heart of the Heritage Rail Trail County Park. The park follows a historic railroad track and is open to the public during daylight hours throughout the year. Now, the Train Station houses a new museum located on the first floor. The museum holds artifacts chronicling local history and the history of the railroad.

Forest County Historical Society and History Center [Pennsylvania]

Description

The Society operates out of the George W. and Martha Bonner Robinson home, built on Elm Street in Tionesta in 1872. Housed in its several levels are displays of printing press, cobbler, blacksmith, butcher, and general farming and domestic tools. War relics and Indian arrowheads, historical paintings, and quilts from the County are also on display. A library of historical books, photographs, pamphlets, and documents is also housed here.

The center offers exhibits, research library access, and occasional recreational and educational events.

Jefferson County Historical Society and History Center [Pennsylvania]

Description

The Jefferson County History Center provides research facilities,
exhibits, & public programs relating to Jefferson County's history, as
well as serving as the primary Visitor Center for the 15-county Lumber
Heritage Region. We are open Wednesday through Saturday from 12 pm to
5 pm.

The center offers exhibits and educational and recreational events.

Buchanan's Birthplace State Park [PA]

Description

Buchanan's Birthplace State Park is located in the gap of Tuscarora Mountain. The park is dedicated in the honor of our nation's 15th president, James Buchanan (in office 1857-1861). Currently a stone pyramid stands on the site of the original cabin where Buchanan was born in 1791. Visitors to the park can take in the majesty of the pyramid and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities in the 18.5 acre park.

Kinzua Bridge State Park [PA]

Description

"The 329-acre Kinzua Bridge State Park is in McKean County and features remnants of the 2,053-foot railroad bridge (viaduct) that was a National Engineering Landmark. A tornado has knocked down much of the bridge." Currently, work is being done to preserving what remains of the bridge, and the future of the bridge and state park is up in the air.

The site offers historical information, visitor information, and a photo gallery featuring 25 photographs of the bridge shortly after it was hit with a tornado.

Union Fire Company No. 1 Museum [PA]

Description

The Union Fire Company No. 1 boasts a proud history of over 215 years, and continues to serve the Carlisle, PA area today. The Fire Company maintains a museum located in part of its old station, which was built in the late 19th century. The museum encompasses two floors and contains artifacts dating back to the founding of the Company in 1789. Visitors can enjoy an impressive collection of firefighting artifacts ranging from vintage firefighting equipment to patches and photos chronicling the history of the company.

Fire Museum of York County [PA]

Description

Fire engines, sirens, and old-fashioned alarm systems all await visitors at the Fire Museum of York County. The museum holds collections and artifacts from more than 200 years of firefighting in York County, PA, including horse drawn fire carriages, fire carriages, vintage fire trucks, firefighter's uniforms, and photographs.

The site is only useful for prospective visitors, as it offers no information besides basic visitor information.

Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks [PA]

Description

The Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks (PSPL) is dedicated towards preserving items of architectural significance in Philadelphia. For over 70 years, PSPL has played a significant role in preservation in Philadelphia by restoring and presenting to the public its historic house museums. PSPL was founded in 1931 by Frances Anne Wister, and today administers three historic houses and historic Waynesborough. In addition, PSPL offers Landmarks Exhibitions, a new initiative that "includes both special historically-based exhibitions by guest scholars, and an ongoing series of site-specific installations and experiemental performers by the innovative artists of today." PSPL is also a major supporter of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Flower Show, and the Barnes Foundation.

Drake Well Museum [PA]

Description

The Drake Well Museum memorializes the site where, in 1859, Edwin L. Drake drilled the oil well that launched the modern petroleum industry. The Museum tells the story of the beginning of the modern oil industry with orientation videos, exhibits, operating oil field machinery, and historic buildings in a park setting.

The museum offers short films, exhibits, tours, educational programs, and research library access.

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum [PA]

Description

Landis Valley Museum, a living history village and farm, collects, preserves, and interprets the history and material culture of the Pennsylvania German rural community from 1740 to 1940 and enhances understanding of their successful practices, interactions with others, and the impact on the state and nation for citizens of and visitors to the Commonwealth. Visitors experience 18th- and 19th-century village and farm life in Lancaster County, PA, all in one visit. With over 100 acres and many historic buildings to explore throughout the four seasons, there is always something to see at Landis Valley Museum.

The site offers exhibits, tours, demonstrations, educational programs that meet PA state curriculum standards, lectures, workshops, and recreational and educational events (including living history events).
