Eckley Miners' Village [PA]

Description

Eckley is one of the hundreds of company mining towns or "patches" built in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania during the 19th century. In 1854, the mining firm of Sharpe, Leisenring, and Company, later known as Sharpe, Weiss, and Company, leased land from the Tench Coxe Estate of Philadelphia and began work on the Council Ridge Colliery and the village of Eckley. The village, built near the colliery where the coal was mined and processed, provided housing for the miners and their families. Its stores, schools, and churches supplied the economic, educational, and religious needs of the villagers. By owning the village, the company had greater control over the lives of their workers.

The site offers exhibits, tours, and occasional recreational and educational events (including living history events).

How do you engage your students in history? Do you introduce them to the lives of other children and students in the past? Explore local history with them? Bring digital media and tools into the classroom? The Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership's education program combines all three techniques to support students in better understanding the past.

In 2008, Congress recognized the Journey Through Hallowed Ground Heritage Area, a strip of land encompassing 15 counties and more than 10,000 registered historic sites in Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. Formed to raise awareness of the area and its resources, the Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership focuses on encouraging not just tourism, but education and historical engagement.

What major events anchor local history in your area? How did young people participate in those events?

"Of the Student, For the Student, and By the Student"—the name of the partnership's award-winning educational program sums up its philosophy. Starting with Harpers Ferry, moving on to Monticello, and then beginning a multi-year project set on the Heritage Area's Civil War national parks, Of the Student, For the Student, By the Student gives middle school students and teachers the knowledge and tools to engage with local historic sites.

At each historic site, teachers, staff, and volunteers introduce students to the site's rich history. Armed with new knowledge and enthusiasm, small groups of students create their own mini-documentary or historical fiction scripts and film "on location" at the historic site. Working together as writers, directors, and actors, students come away from the program with a sense of ownership and a deeper connection to the history of their communities.

Description

The 1719 Hans Herr House is the oldest Mennonite dwelling in the U.S. At its peak, the residence was located on 10,000 acres belonging to nine Mennonite men. Today, the museum complex includes several barns and Pennsylvania German farmhouses. Collections include agricultural equipment dating from the 18th century to present.

The house offers guided tours, summer day camps with 18th-century activities, local area tours, customizable field trips with hands-on activities, student apprenticeship programs, wagon rides, period skill demonstrations, and outreach programs. Outreach program options include slide shows, storytelling, demonstrations, games, activities, and food. Handicapped access, particularly wheelchair access, is limited.

ExplorePAhistory offers teachers a wide variety of educational resources for incorporating Pennsylvanian history into the U.S. history classroom. The site is divided into three main sections: Stories from PA History, Visit PA Regions, and Teach PA History. Educators will find the first and third sections particularly useful for designing lesson plans. In the Stories section, 34 thematic sections trace the history of the Keystone State. The Teach section also offer over 100 lesson plans that can be searched by historical period, subject, grade level, and discipline, or by keywords.

Teachers should not discount the VisitPA section of the site. Although designed as a way to attract tourists to the state, the regional subsections provide educators particular stories and featured markers that provide depth to Pennsylvania history.

ExplorePAhistory's simplicity and teacher-centered resources makes it a useful site for exploring U.S. history through the history of one of America’s oldest and most influential states.

ExplorePAhistory is a collaborative project between the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, the U.S. Department of Education, Pennsylvania Public Television Network, the William Penn Foundation, and several state agencies. Additionally, the project’s education materials are a product from a Teaching American History (TAH) grant with Ridgeway School District and history professionals across the state.

These eight databases present more than 176,000 articles from 18th- and 19th-century newspapers, magazines, books, and genealogical records. Much of the material comes from Pennsylvania and other mid-Atlantic states.

Godey’s Lady’s Book (1830–1880), one of the most popular 19th-century publications, furnished middle- and upper-class American women with fiction, fashion illustrations, and editorials. The Pennsylvania Gazette (1728–1800), a Philadelphia newspaper, is described as the New York Times of the 18th century. The Civil War: A Newspaper Perspective includes major articles from the Charleston Mercury, the New York Herald, and the Richmond Enquirer. African-American Newspapers: The 19th Century includes runs from six newspapers published in New York, Washington, DC, and Toronto between 1827 and 1876. American County Histories to 1900 provides 60 volumes covering the local history of New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Genealogical Catalogue: Chester County 1809–1870 has been partially digitized, with 25,000 records available. The Pennsylvania Newspaper Record: Delaware County 1819–1870 addresses industrialization in a rural area settled by Quaker farmers.

Why aren't Delaware and Georgia included on the body of Ben Franklin's famous "Join or Die" snake? And why did the artist combine the four northeastern colonies as one?
Answer

The "Join, or Die" snake, a cartoon image printed in numerous newspapers as the conflict between England and France over the Ohio Valley was expanding into war—"the first global war fought on every continent," as Thomas Bender recently has written—first appeared in the May 9, 1754 edition of Benjamin Franklin’s Pennsylvania Gazette. The image displayed a snake cut up into eight pieces. The snake’s detached head was labeled "N.E." for “New England,” while the trailing seven sections were tagged with letters representing the colonies of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The exhortation "JOIN, or DIE" appeared underneath the image.

Lester C. Olson points out that Franklin might have seen images of snakes divided into two segments that had been published in Paris in 1685, 1696, and 1724 with the similar caption "Se rejoinder ou mourir." The image in the Pennsylvania Gazette followed an article reporting the recent surrender of a British frontier fort to the French army and purported plans of the French, with their Indian allies, to establish a massive frontier presence with which to terrify British settlers and traders. The article ended with the surmise that the French were confident they would be able to "take an easy Possession of such Parts of the British Territory as they find most convenient for them" due to the "present disunited State of the British Colonies" and warned that the French success "must end in the Destruction of the British interest; Trade and Plantations in America."

Franklin was opposed in his efforts to unify the colonies by representatives of some of the colonial assemblies

A longtime advocate of intercolonial union in dealings with Indians, Franklin helped make such a union an important agenda item for the Albany Congress, convened shortly after the snake image was published, on earlier orders from the Board of Trade, the British advisory council on colonial policy, with the goal of establishing one treaty between all the colonies and the Six Nations of Iroquois. As a commissioner to the congress appointed by the governor of Pennsylvania, Franklin was opposed in his efforts to unify the colonies by representatives of some of the colonial assemblies intent on maintaining control over their own affairs.

Robert C. Newbold has speculated that Georgia was probably excluded from the snake image, "because, as a defenseless frontier area, it could contribute nothing to common security." Only three laws had been passed in Georgia since its founding as a colony in 1732, prompting a historian of the colony and state to conclude, "The hope that Georgia might become a self-reliant province of soldier-farmers had not succeeded, and even the early debtor-haven dream had not come to pass." Delaware, Newbold added, "shared the same governor, albeit a different legislature, as Pennsylvania; hence the Gazette probably considered it as included with Pennsylvania."

As with the snake image, the Albany Plan, drafted during the congress, did not include Georgia and Delaware in its proposed colonial union for mutual defense and security, specifying only Massachusetts Bay, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The segmented snake image was revived in a number of newspapers during the 1765 Stamp Act conflict, again without reference to Georgia and Delaware. In 1774, when the segmented snake image, along with the "Join or Die" slogan, was employed as a masthead for newspapers in York, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania, a pointed tail labeled "G" for Georgia had been added.

Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site

Description

Hot, smoky, noisy—these words describe how Hopewell Furnace looked from 1771 to 1883. Hopewell and other "iron plantations" laid the foundations for America's iron and steel industry. Today, the site stands as an example of America's development during the Industrial Revolution.

The site offers exhibits, tours, and occasional recreational and educational events (including living history events).

Gettysburg National Military Park [PA]

Description

The Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point in the Civil War, the Union victory in the summer of 1863 that ended General Robert E. Lee's second and most ambitious invasion of the North. Often referred to as the "High Water Mark of the Confederacy," it was the war's bloodiest battle with 51,000 casualties. It also provided President Abraham Lincoln with the setting for his most famous address.

The park offers tours, exhibits, a film, educational programs, and occasional recreational and educational events (including living history events).

Valley Forge National Historical Park [PA]

Description

The Valley Forge National Historical Park presents the social and military histories of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. In 1777, the British succeeded in capturing the then capital of the United States, Philadelphia. The Continental Army, under George Washington (1732-1799), encamped in Valley Forge that winter in order to keep pressure on the British in Philadelphia, while avoiding attack and the need for winter transportation, which was rendered nearly impossible given weather conditions. While at Valley Forge, the army received training from Baron Friedrich Wilhelm Augustus von Steuben (1730-1794), increasing its military prowess. Sites include a memorial chapel, Washington's headquarters, a brigade encampment, and the farmhouse in which General James Varnum (1748-1789) quartered.

The site offers an 18-minute introductory film, exhibits, guided tours, a cell phone tour, trolley tours, living history interpreters, educational programs, Junior Ranger tours and activities, library and archive access, a summer teachers' institute, and two sites which sell refreshments. The library and archive collections are non-circulating and only accessible by appointment. The website offers audio and video podcasts, a curriculum guide, and suggested reading. The park also offers a unique program, wherein children can muster into the Continental Army, learning about different aspects of army life each session. "Veteran" students assist with teaching newcomers.

Washington's headquarters is currently closed for restoration.

Fort Necessity National Battlefield [PA]

Description

The battle at Fort Necessity in the summer of 1754 was the opening battle of the French and Indian war. The Fort Necessity National Battlefield features a restored Fort Necessity. Trained historical interpreters show visitors what life was like in the mid 18th century and how the battle at Fort Necessity was fought. The National Park Service offers curriculum based classroom educational programs as well as field trips and guided tours of the site.
