Grove City Area Historical Society

Description

"In 1998, the Grove City Area celebrated the 200th anniversary of its founding. During that year, many activities commemorated this anniversary. A book was produced, Reflections of Our Past: Celebrating 200 Years of Grove City, Pennsylvania. A play, Upon These Waters, was written and performed by members of the community. There was a July 4 celebration with a community band performance and fireworks. During that year, the rich history of the Grove City area was rediscovered. Many citizens expressed an interest in preserving this local history. Some of those citizens suggested forming a local historical society in order to preserve the local history."

Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society [PA]

Description

The mission of the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society is to restore and preserve the Haldeman Mansion to the condition it would have appeared in 1812 when world renowned scientist and linguist Samuel Steman Haldeman was born here. The Haldeman Mansion, birthplace of Professor Samuel Stehman Haldeman was completed in 1812 by his grandparents, John and Maria Brenneman Haldeman.

The site offers biographical information about Samuel Haldeman, a calendar of events, press releases, and other general information about the society.

The mansion is currently under development.

Whiskey Rebellion

Description

This iCue Mini-Documentary describes a new tax on liquor which provoked many of the frontiersman in western Pennsylvania to form the Whiskey Rebellion. President George Washington responded by sending troops to quell the uprising.

Save Our Steel [PA]

Description

Save Our Steel is a Bethlehem, PA, organization that is devoted to preserving the industrial history of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Currently, the organization is working with the Sands BethWorks Casino in order to help preserve Bethlehem's industrial heritage. The casino is currently being built in the old ore pits, and is scheduled to be completed in mid-2009. Save Our Steel is first and foremost an advocacy group, and has an ultimate goal to create a historical industrial district.

The site offers a photo gallery featuring 13 photographs, organization information, a calendar of events, ways to get involved, an online store, and resources for potential citizen-advocates.

This organization is planning to use the historic Bethlehem Steel site for historical interpretation, commercial functions, and residential zoning.

August Wilson Center for African American Culture [PA]

Description

"The August Wilson Center for African American Culture is a not-for-profit organization that presents performing, visual, and education programs that celebrate the contributions of African Americans within the region and the impact of cultural expression from Africa to the African Diaspora. The AWC's presentations include dance, music, art, theater and other cultural, educational and artistic events." The center is currently constructing a building which will serve as a museum and presentation place.

The site offers information on upcoming events, an events calendar, a virtual tour of the building under construction, and a brief biography of August Wilson.

The center is under development. Opening is planned for September 2009.

Philadelphia's Economy in an Age of Atlantic World Revolutions

Description

This seminar will have daily discussion at the Library Company of Philadelphia, which was founded by Benjamin Franklin, and where participants will have hands-on access to writings and images of this tumultuous era. Daily meetings will look at the ups and downs of fighting a long war for American independence, and then relate these experiences to the wider Atlantic world of revolutionary contagion. Participants will visit some of the historical places Philadelphians would have known more than 200 years ago, many of which are within blocks of the Library Company.

Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum [PA]

Description

"Also known as the Philadelphia Hall of Fame, The Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame Foundation was founded in May 2002. A Pennsylvania 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, our mission, in brief, is to develop a sports hall of fame for Philadelphia as a means to preserve and promote the rich history of Philadelphia sports. Ultimately, we will build a museum in the city to honor our sports history." Currently, the foundation is working towards assembling funds in order to actually construct a hall of fame. The foundation is also now assembling historic philadelphia sports artifacts.

The site offers an online museum, information and small about hall of fame inductees, and an archive of the foundation's newsletter, The Legend.

The hall does not offer a physical site for visitation.
