"We invite you to take part in this historic commemoration year by attending this workshop sponsored by Appalachian State University, which is located less than five miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway in Boone, North Carolina. Participants will have a chance to experience the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains while learning about the history behind the most visited National Park Service site. Based on the campus of Appalachian State University, participants will spend mornings in combination lecture and discussions along with hands-on sessions working with a variety of primary sources. Each participant will have a chance to collect materials and ideas for use in developing curriculum projects. Each afternoon, we will take field trips to explore many of the cultural resources along the Parkway. Evenings will be free to explore the Appalachian Mountain town of Boone, work in the state of the art library, or relax at one of the many local coffee shops while enjoying some traditional Appalachian music. Throughout the week, participants will have many chances to interact with faculty who are experts on the history of the Blue Ridge Parkway and the region of Appalachia as well as meet rangers and managers from the National Park Service."

The two-day institute investigates opportunities to collect field data, apply it to classroom lessons across the curricula, and connect it to real world applications in America's national parks.

Participants will create schoolyard investigation kits to take back to their classrooms; be introduced to outdoor, field-based activities that can be reproduced in a number of settings; learn classroom-based activities relating to science, social studies, technology, math, language arts, small group communication, public speaking, art, health, and citizenship; use GPS units and computers to create digital maps of study sites; qualify for student scholarships and transportation assistance to take your students to the Schoodic Education Adventure program.

In this workshop, teachers will learn about the stories of civilians and soldiers during the Union occupation of Murfreesboro. This workshop will feature special living history programs at Fortress Rosecrans, the fortification built by the Union army after the Battle of Stones River.

This free weekend will feature "field trip" tours of Chancellorsville and Fredericksburg, focusing on techniques teachers can use to make a battlefield visit a central part of their Civil War curriculum. This event is open to all teachers and school librarians grades K–12, not just history teachers.

In this workshop, teachers will get a chance to watch children participate in educational activities based on Stones River National Battlefield's curriculum-based lesson plans. Educators will also learn about the National Park Service's Junior Ranger and Web Ranger programs so that they can encourage their students to explore and learn from Stones River National Battlefield and other national parks on their own.

Participants in this program join Acadia National Park staff for the Schoodic Education Adventure (SEA). Educators bring their 4th through 8th grade students to this three- or four-day residential program at the Schoodic Education and Research Center in Winter Harbor, Maine.

Curriculum-based classroom activities and hands-on field experience offer an invaluable learning experience in a unique setting. Situated on the rugged coast of Maine, the campus is accessible to shoreline, wetland, and forest ecosystems and provides a rich educational environment for students.

The SEA program is aligned with Maine State Learning Results and integrated across the curriculum. Opportunities for study include math, social studies, language arts, physical education, science, technology, health, and art. The program combines curriculum-based classroom activities
and hands-on field experience taught by both park rangers and teachers.

To attend the Schoodic Education Adventure, teachers can apply as early as the preceding fall, but no later than May in the spring before they plan to come. The program is offered in the fall from mid-September to mid-November.
