The Susan B. Anthony House [NY]

Description

The Susan B. Anthony House presents the life and impact of Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906), one of the strongest voices for women's right to vote, abolition of slavery, and temperance. Anthony was closely involved with the political programs of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Frederick Douglass. The structure was Anthony's home between 1866 and 1906 and the site of her 1872 arrest for voting despite her sex. In addition to displaying Anthony's own possessions, the house offers an exhibit on women's suffrage.

The house offer exhibits, period rooms, lectures, tours, and an educational program on women's suffrage which meets state education standards. Groups of more than 12 require reservations.

Fenton History Center [NY]

Description

The Fenton History Center presents the history of Chautauqua County and Jamestown, New York. The center is housed in the 1863 Italian Villa-style mansion of Governor Reuben E. Fenton (1819-1885).

The center offers guided tours; self-guided tours; period rooms; research assistance; a research library; exhibits; a monthly history club with activities and field trips; and roughly 30 educational programs for students, available at the center or presented by an interpreter as outreach programming. The website offers web-exclusive exhibits. Reservations are required for guided tours and education programs.

Wilmington Historical Society [NY]

Description

The Wilmington Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Wilmington, New York.

The society offers two outreach programs. In the first, listeners learn about hunting bees, trapping bears, and the equipment used for both skills, which were not uncommon in the early 1900s. The second is a slide show presentation which compares the Wilmington of today to its past.

Thomas Paine National Historical Association [NY]

Description

The Thomas Paine National Historical Association seeks to share the story of Thomas Paine (1737-1809) and gain widespread acknowledgment of Thomas Paine as the primary founder of the United States. The association operates a museum, the Thomas Paine Cottage, and a monument. The cottage once served as Paine's home. Thomas Paine was a pamphleteer and revolutionary, who promoted the concept of human rights and supported both the French and American revolutions. Although he supported the French Revolution, he did not support the execution of Louis XVI—instead proposing that he be exiled to America, since he had financially aided the United States in the Revolutionary War.

The cottage offers exhibits. The association offers educational programs, public speakers, and presentations.

The museum is currently closed for re-cataloging and preservation.

Saratoga Springs History Museum [NY]

Description

The Saratoga Springs History Museum is located in the old Canfield Casino in Congress Park, and works to preserve and showcase the history of Saratoga Springs, New York.

The museum hosts free lectures and presentations every month and offers a variety of exhibits, educational programs, and group tours of both the tour and Congress Park. The most popular of the educational programs is the Health, History, and Horses program which is designed for fourth graders. The website offers visitor information and information regarding upcoming events.

The Oliver House Museum [NY]

Description

The Oliver House Museum is a historic house museum, focusing on the years 1852 through 1942. The 1852 Italianate structure contains artifacts from the family who resided in the home, as well as from the Yates County Genealogical & Historical Society collections. Topics covered by exhibits include Jemima Wilkinson (1752-1819), the first U.S. woman to found a religious movement (the Universal Friends), and Native Americans.

The museum offers guided tours and unguided exploration, period rooms, and exhibits.

Finger Lakes Boating Museum [NY]

Description

The Finger Lakes Boating Museum presents information concerning the long history of boating in the region, dating back to the Iroquois Nation. The collection includes over 90 boats built in the Finger Lakes region of New York State, as well as related artifacts. The archive contains extensive information about the boat building industry within the region. It is of note that the museum currently displays its collection in a variety of venues, as it has yet to establish a dedicated architectural space.

Museum of the City of New York [NY]

Description

The Museum of the City of New York presents the history of New York City and its people. Permanent exhibits offer artifacts and information relevant to New York's theatrical history, interior design, firefighting, maritime commerce, and toys made or used in the city. The collection consists of 1.5 million items in the following categories: decorative arts; prints, photographs, paintings, sculptures, and drawings of the city and/or its people; theater and Broadway; toys; and costumes and textiles.

The museum offers a 25-minute introductory multimedia presentation, exhibits, lectures, performances, guided school tours, educational programs, self-guided tours, summer programs, educator workshops, an after school architecture and urban planning program, and Saturday American history classes. Reservations are required for all school groups, guided or self-guided. Headsets and neck loops are available for hard-of-hearing visitors, and all films are captioned. The website offers materials for self-guided school groups.

Due to ongoing renovations, the fire engines are in storage; and the halls containing the exhibit New York Interiors (1690-1906) is currently closed.

Wyckoff Farmhouse Museum [NY]

Description

Pieter Claessen Wyckoff emigrated from Holland to New Amsterdam in 1637 at the age of 17. In 1649, he brought his bride Grietje van Ness to this house, where they raised 11 children. Wyckoff House is one of New York State's oldest existing domiciles.

Liberty Museum and Arts Center [NY]

Description

The Liberty Museum & Arts Center Building was first constructed as a hotel in 1894. The Poellman House, as the hotel was known, contained 30 rooms with baths, steam heat, all "sanitary arrangements" and a first class Café and Bowling Alley. The hotel closed in 1936. The Liberty Museum has a dual mission of presenting creative arts as well as programs of local and regional history. Themes which have been previously covered include Catskills resorts, Main Street, and the history of Route 17.

The museum and art center offer exhibits, art classes, lectures, cultural programs, and programs designed for children.
