Pompey Historical Society and Museum [NY]

Description

The Pompey Historical Society is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the history of Pompey. The historical society accomplishes these aims through the William G. Pomeroy Museum and Research Center, which includes exhibits and artifacts relating to Pompey's history as well as genealogical information.

Description

The Erie Canal Museum was opened in 1962 in order to chronicle the history and culture of the Erie Canal. Presently, the museum offers exhibits on topics as varied as the history of Syracuse, the history of the canal, jobs on the canal, and taverns on the canal. 4 River Valleys Historical Society [NY]

Description

Our mission is to interpret, preserve, collect and make available evidence of the past and to further understand and appreciate the prehistory and history of the four River Valleys. The Four River Valleys are the Beaver, Black, Indian and Deer River Valleys. The historical society has published numerous articles as well as several books, all of which are available for purchase on the website. In addition, the society has recently acquired the Hiram Hubbard House, which is currently undergoing renovations and will serve as the society's headquarters and resource center. A heritage room, documenting the history of the congregation, is located within the 1915 Woolworth Memorial United Methodist Church.

Chapman Historical Museum [NY]

Description

The Chapman Historical Museum is "located near downtown Glens Falls, a small city at the southeastern edge of the Adirondack Mountains, an hour north of Albany, New York. Today the museum consists of the restored Victorian home of the DeLong family, a changing exhibition gallery, research archive and gift shop." The museum also provides a wealth of educational programs tailored for children of different ages and is working on a Glens Falls historical site.

H. Lee White Marine Museum [NY]

Description

The H. Lee White Marine Museum was founded in 1982, and was moved into its modern location along the historic Oswego piers in 1998. Currently, the museum is a fully functioning maritime museum, and holds a variety of maritime artifacts vessels. The undisputed highlight of the collection is the National Historic Landmark veteran of the WWII Normandy Invasion, the U.S. Army LT-5 Tugboat. The tugboat has been carefully restored and is currently the only remaining fully operational vessel of its kind. The museum is also working with the City of Oswego to preserve and protect the historic Oswego West Pierhead Lighthouse.

Steuben Memorial State Historic Site [NY]

Description

"The Steuben Memorial honors the 'Drillmaster of the American Revolution,' Baron von Steuben, whose valuable wartime services have been described as being second in importance only to those of George Washington." In addition to his work in the Revolutionary War, Steuben is notable for authoring the "Blue Book," which is still an important reference for military training and organization. The state historic site is located on Steuben's grave in central New York.

Washington County Historical Society [NY]

Description

"The Washington County Historical Society is a vibrant, educational, non-profit organization, chartered by the NYS Board of Regents in 1940. Its primary purpose is to promote public interest and participation in the preservation of the rich cultural heritage of Washington County, NY. The Heritage Research Library, a repository for regional books, written documents, genealogical information, and memorabilia, and the publication of eighteen books highlight preservation efforts. Lectures, workshops, tours and social events are scheduled throughout the year."

Grant Cottage State Historic Site [NY]

Description

It was at this small cottage in the Adirondack Mountains that Ulysses S. Grant died of throat cancer on July 23, 1885. He had finished proofreading his memoirs only four days earlier. "Today, the cottage and its furnishings remain essentially the same as during the Grant family's stay for six weeks in 1885. Guests to the cottage may visit the spacious porch, tour the cottage's four rooms, and view floral arrangements that remain from Grant's August 4th funeral."

The site offers brief historical information and visitor information regarding Grant Cottage. In addition, the site is part of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, and so offers information regarding all of New York's state parks and historic sites.

Historic Albany Foundation [NY]

Description

"Historic Albany Foundation is a private, not-for-profit membership organization working to promote the preservation and appreciation of the built environment in and around the city of Albany. Since 1974, Historic Albany Foundation has fulfilled its mandate through public education, promotion and membership, provision of design and technical assistance, community projects, advocacy for endangered buildings, publications, tours, lectures, and operation of an architectural parts warehouse."
