Description

Professor David Tucker looks at the views of religion, government, and the ideal American citizen and way of life presented in early 20th-century writing; and contrasts them with the views on the same subjects held by the Founding Fathers. He uses writing by the authors Flannery O'Connor (1925-1964), Herbert Croly (1869-1930), and Howard W. Kellog.

American Battle Monuments Commission

Description

The American Battle Monuments Commission, established by the Congress in 1923, is an agency of the Executive Branch of the Federal Government. The Commission—guardian of America’s overseas commemorative cemeteries and memorials—honors the service, achievements and sacrifice of United States Armed Forces. The Commission’s commemorative mission includes:
* Designing, constructing, operating and maintaining permanent American cemeteries in foreign countries.
* Establishing and maintaining U.S. military memorials, monuments and markers where American armed forces have served overseas since April 6, 1917, and within the U.S. when directed by public law.
* Controlling the design and construction of permanent U.S. military monuments and markers by other U.S. citizens and organizations, both public and private, and encouraging their maintenance.

The site offers information on all cemeteries and memorials run by the commission, as well as information regarding services and events offered.

The White House

Description

TheWhiteHouse.com provides a wealth of information on the current administration, ranging from recent press releases to the stance of the administration on various important issues such as defense and health care. The site functions as an informational site about the current administration rather than the White House itself.

The site offers all news, press releases, executive orders and proclamations issued by the current administration. In addition, the site has information about the history of the presidential office, virtual tours and tour information about the White House itself, links to Federal Statistics, and the current administration's stance on a variety of issues.

Participants take part in lectures and discussions on constitutional themes pertinent to the curriculum content, classroom strategies, and performance assessment. The hearing is a model for student hearings to be held during the school year. Experienced teacher mentors assist participants in discussing the challenges of teaching civic education and preparing for the culminating hearing.

The American Presidency in the 20th Century

Description

This seminar will explore how 10 United States presidents, ranging from Theodore Roosevelt to Ronald Reagan, shaped national life during the 20th century. Reading profiles of these presidents by historians and other scholars, participants will look at why some presidents have succeeded and others failed. They will ask how each president addressed two overarching issues: What is the proper role of government in the United States? What role should America play in the larger world?
