Georgia's fate was decided in 1742 when Spanish and British forces clashed on St. Simons Island. Fort Frederica's troops defeated the Spanish, ensuring Georgia's future as a British colony. Today, the archaeological remnants of Frederica are protected by the National Park Service.

"The Battle of Fort Pulaski in April 1862 marked a turning point in military history. It featured the first significant use of rifled cannons in combat." In addition to surprising military strategists worldwide, the battle marked a major Union victory along the coast of Georgia. This was an immensely significant development towards the success of the Union naval blockade - one of the key points of the Civil War. The fort has been restored to its pre-Civil War condition, and offers a variety of interpretive and educational programs in order to show visitors what life was like in the fort during the Civil War prior to its fall.

"The Atlanta Preservation Center is the agency for coordination, knowledge, research and advocacy for preservation in the city." The center was founded in 1980, and since has worked with the government, business, and community leaders to preserve over 175 residential and commercial buildings, neighborhoods, and park spaces. Currently, the center is focused on preserving the historic structures on the Beltline, a 22-mile loop of public parks, trails, and transportation. In addition, the center offers regularly scheduled walking tours and popular classroom programs on architecture and community planning.

The Andersonville National Historic Site has a three-fold mission—namely, operation of the National Prisoner of War Museum; care of the Andersonville National Cemetery; and preservation of Camp Sumter, also known as Andersonville prison. Camp Sumter was among the largest Civil War prisons established by the Confederacy, and housed more than 32,000 Union soldiers in 1864. At that time, more than 100 men died on an average day in the camp. The National Prisoner of War Museum honors the U.S. men and women who have suffered as prisoners of war. The Andersonville National Cemetery originally served as the burial grounds of Union soldiers who died in Camp Sumter. Today, the cemetery is an active site for veteran burials.

The site offers a curriculum-based educational program for students, educational resource packages for rental, a 3-mile self-guided hike with a questionnaire, Junior Ranger activities, exhibits, and a summer camp. The educational program focuses on the prison at Camp Sumter; and meets Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama educational standards. The educational program must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance.

The Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site is located in Atlanta, GA, at the site of King's birth. The home has been preserved in much the same state as during King's childhood years, and is open to visitors year round by appointment.

The historic site features exhibits on Martin Luther King Jr.'s life, as well as field trip programs, guided tours, and traveling trunks. The website offers visitor information, a history of the home, a brief biography of Martin Luther King Jr., a calendar of events, and resources for teachers including curriculum guides.

Kingston, rich in antebellum history, displays its pride through artifacts, scrapbooks, and photographs in two museums maintained by the Kingston Woman's History Club. The newest museum, the Martha Mulinix Annex, opened in April 1998 and displays material about Kingston and the surrounding area. The Civil War museum portrays Kingston's role in the Civil War along with memorabilia from past Kingston Confederate Memorial Day Observances (the oldest such ceremony in the nation).
