The Wisconsin Maritime Museum is dedicating to chronicling the history of Wisconsin's maritime and shipbuilding history. The museum is located in Manitowoc, WI, Wisconsin's most famous shipbuilding port. The museum is home to the U.S.S. COBIA, a WWII fleet submarine.

Evergreen Aviation Museum [OR]

Description

The Evergreen Aviation Museum exists to present the history of air and space technology and to honor United States veterans. Collection highlights include a replica of Wilbur and Orville Wright's 1903 Flyer; the circa 1947 Hughes Flying Boat or "Spruce Goose," the largest aircraft ever constructed; and the Russian Photon space capsule, launched 1990. More than 50 aircraft are on display.

The museum offers exhibits, self-guided tours, guided tours, guided tours and activities for students, a summer camp, story times and crafts for kindergartners through third graders, a youth ground school, a youth overnight program, a junior docent program, Scout programs, radio-controlled flying seminars, archival access, two cafes, and boxed lunches. Reservations are required for group tours. Two weeks advance notice is required for groups of 20 or more wanting boxed lunches. Appointments are required for archival access. Wheelchairs are available for use on site. The website offers an education assistance grant application, relevant activities, and a teacher's guide.

Beatty Museum & Historical Society [NV]

Description

The Beatty Museum and Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the historical heritage of the Bullfrog Mining District and Southern Nye County. The museum chronicles the history of the area, from its prehistoric origins through the Bullfrog gold rush.

The museum offers guided tours and exhibits of local history. The website offers visitor information, a history of the area, and online research resources.

Rosa Parks Museum [AL]

Description

The Rosa Parks Museum presents the history of the events of and the people involved in the 1955 and 1956 Montgomery Bus Boycott. The museum is located at the site of Rosa Parks' refusal to give her seat on a Montgomery public bus to a Caucasian man. Following Parks' arrest, many African American residents boycotted the bus system as a protest against segregation. In 1956, the Supreme Court ruled segregation of buses unconstitutional. Collections include a replica of the aforementioned bus. The children's wing offers a sensory "time travel experience," which presents life under early Jim Crow laws.

The museum offers exhibits and a research center.

Foreign Relations of the United States (FRUS), 1861-1960

Published annually by the State Department, Foreign Relations of the United States (FRUS) is the official record of major declassified U.S. foreign policy decisions and diplomatic activity. Material, including transcripts of tape recordings, comes from Presidential libraries and executive departments and agencies. Digitized material does not reflect the full range of the published volumes. Documents included have been selected for their ability to illuminate "policy formulation and major aspects and repercussions of its execution."

The first website covers the years from 1861 to 1960. Each volume of more than 500 pages contains an annual message from the President, a list of papers with subjects of correspondence, circulars on subjects such as sanitation and conservation, and chapters dedicated to individual nations. Decisions involve a wide range of topics, including international arbitration and the protection of migratory birds. Visitors may search volumes individually or the whole set by keyword, subject, and date.

The second website offers materials from 1945–1972. Materials come from the Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon administrations. Additional volumes will be added on the Nixon and Ford administrations.

These 181 firsthand accounts of North American and Canadian exploration range from Viking stories such as The Saga of Eric the Red from circa 1,000 CE to journal entries written in the early 19th century on a trapping expedition in the Southwest. Documents include the Original Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, 1804–1806. Materials include rare books, original manuscripts, and classic travel narratives.

Users can browse the full archive or by expedition, settlement, geographic region, and U.S. state or Canadian province. Each document is individually searchable and accompanied by a short background essay and a reference map. There are also 150 images available, including woodcuts, drawings, paintings, and photographs. Highlights follows the collection chronologically and connects moments in American history with eyewitness accounts.

Providing a host of resources on U.S. history survey, the three main features are: WWW.History, Many Pasts, and Making Sense of Evidence.

WWW.History provides an annotated guide to more than 1,000 high-quality websites covering all of U.S. history. Users can browse websites by time period or topic and can search by keyword.

Many Pasts offers more than 1,000 primary sources in text, image, and audio, from an exchange between Powhatan and Captain John Smith to comments by the director of the Arab American Family Support Center in Brooklyn after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Making Sense of Evidence offers eight guides with interactive exercises designed to help students learn to analyze various kinds of primary sources, including maps, early film, oral history, and popular song. These guides offer questions to ask and provide examples of how to analyze kinds of evidence. There are also eight multimedia modules that model strategies for analyzing primary sources, including political cartoons, blues, and abolitionist speeches.

Historical Society of Topsail Island and Missiles and More Museum [NC]

Description

The Historical Society of Topsail Island operates the Missiles and More Museum. The Missiles and More Museum contains exhibits addressing Operation Bumblebee, Osprey aircraft, Camp Davis, natural history, Native American life, and pirates. Operation Bumblee was a circa 1946-1948 confidential guided missile testing program under the U.S. Navy, while Camp Davis served as an important air training center for World War II.

The society offers interactive and traditional exhibits, monthly lectures, and school and group museum tours. Reservations are required for lectures and museum tours.

Using Visual Fine Arts to Enrich Understanding

Question

What resources or techniques would you recommend for teaching using art and its analysis in the social studies/U.S. history classroom? I have already read "Historical Evidence in the Material World: Art History, Material Culture, and Historical Thinking" on your site. In this instance, we are concentrating on the visual fine arts – painting and photography.

Answer

Things have changed since teachers had to go through their private and local libraries to create slideshows using art to teach history. Now with a click of a mouse and a projector, we can show students provocative works of art. And while including art in your teaching will, no doubt, engage some of your reluctant students and add variety and aesthetic appeal to your curriculum, deliberate methods are required when teaching students to analyze the visual fine arts as a means to learn about the past. And those methods require slowing down when we observe and discuss a piece of art.

It may be useful to think about three things as critical to teaching students how to analyze art as historical artifacts:

  • Close reading (and we use the term “reading” broadly here, referring to observing the item closely);
  • Feeling and considering the emotional impact of the piece;
  • Considering the historical context of the piece.
  • You’ve started with a good entry that introduces some key aspects of using art. Author Carolyn Halpin-Healy, talking about how to use material culture, explains that analyzing these kinds of sources should “begin by describing the object--to analyze its structure, to consider the circumstance of its creation--and only then to propose an interpretation of the meaning of the piece.” She goes on to identify specific steps in this process that include the key aspects above.

    Deliberate methods are required when teaching students to analyze the visual fine arts as a means to learn about the past. Those methods require slowing down when we observe and discuss a piece of art.

    EDSITEMENT
    We have other resources at teachinghistory.org that address art analysis. Visit this review of a lesson plan that uses art and documents to investigate Paul Revere’s ride. The lesson comes from Edsitement, a site created by the National Endowment for the Humanities [NEH] that includes lesson plans using a variety of material culture for both World and American history. These plans can serve as inspiration, models, and resource banks for analyzing art in the history/social studies classroom.

    And don’t miss the NEH’s Picturing America program. It was designed to encourage and support teachers in using art to teach history and social studies. This tremendous resource includes a set of artistic works to use in the classroom, information about the works and artists, links to other sites with resources for teaching with art, and a teacher’s resource book.

The third video in this series may be most helpful to you since it concerns the ideas of slowing down with a piece and closely observing it while considering one’s emotional response to it.
