The History Database is a database program created specifically for historical research, writing, and cataloging. "It combines computer database management with historical research practices and with library, archival, and museum cataloging standards to make the process of cataloging or note-taking faster and easier, and to protect your long term investment in the information collected."

The site offers detailed information and user guides for the history database software, along with a history of the database project. Potential users should note that this website is extremely dated, as it was last modified in 1997.

Sam Gross Summer Institute

Description

Through the Institute, teachers begin an investigation of the history of the Holocaust, the systematic, planned annihilation of European Jews and other groups by Nazi Germany from 1933–1945. Participants will also broaden their depth of knowledge about current genocides and continued episodes of man's inhumanity to man during the 20th and 21st centuries. The institute includes a wide range of age-appropriate resources and strategies being modeled through exploration of the best practices in an integrated teaching model. Educators will be equipped to return to their classrooms with the knowledge and pedagogical resources to teach in a manner that leads to an investigation of the ramifications of prejudice, racism, and stereotyping. Educators will examine what it means to be a responsible and respectful person for the purpose of encouraging tolerance of diversity in a pluralistic society and for nurturing and protecting democratic values and institutions.

Description

Using stories from her prize-winning book, Doris Kearns Goodwin examines the life and legacy of Abraham Lincoln. Goodwin argues that Lincoln's voracious intellect, his kind and generous demeanor, his empathy, and his appreciation for the talents of others led him to assemble what she calls "the most unusual cabinet in history." Goodwin also provides an insider's look into her research methods, as she recounts combing through thousands of pages of letters and diaries.

Pocahontas and the Children Exchange

Description

This iCue Mini-Documentary describes an arrangement at Jamestown settlement in Virginia, in which both the English and Indians exchanged young children, including Pocahontas, in order to learn more about each other's culture and language. This arrangement fathered a cultural exchange between the two groups.

Historic Cold Spring Village [NJ]

Description

"Historic Cold Spring Village is an Early American open-air living history museum." Encompassing 22 acres in Cape May, New Jersey, visitors to the village can take part in a variety of interactive, education, and hands-on family activities. The village maintains a small farm where "heritage crops" are grown, 26 beautifully restored buildings, and a staff of historically-clothed interpreters, who educate and entertain visitors regarding the lifestyles, issues, trades, and crafts of turn of the century New Jersey.

The site offers an events calendar, visitor information, detailed information about the educational programs offered, both in class programs and programs at the village, a section for crafting and recipe ideas, and a listing of recent press releases.
