Description

The Greater Houston Preservation Alliance is dedicated to preserving the rich historical and architectural heritage of Houston, Texas. While mainly focused on advocacy and preservation efforts, the alliance also offers walking tours of architecturally significant areas of Houston. The tours are offered every second Sunday or by appointment.

Buffalo Soldiers National Museum [TX]

Description

The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum presents the story of African American soldiers in the United States. An 1866 Congressional act created six African American Army units, two cavalry and four infantry. The high skill level of the 10th cavalry unit led to its members being known as Buffalo Warriors as early as 1867. Over time, the nickname spread; and came to refer to all African American soldiers.

The museum offers exhibits.

Historic Houston [TX]

Description

Historic Houston is dedicated to the preservation of Houston's historic and architectural heritage. In addition, Historic Houston is a leader is sustainable design, and has won several awards such as the "Outstanding Environmental Leadership Award."

Historic Houston offers an educational series of workshops, lectures, and classes that are open to the public and to school groups. The website offers general information about Historic Houston as well as information regarding the educational series.

Friends of the Governor's Mansion [TX]

Description

The Friends of the Governor's Mansion advocate the history, preservation, and restoration of Texas' 1856 Greek Revival Governor's Mansion. The mansion has served as the official home of every governor of Texas and governor's family since its construction in 1856. The mansion is the single oldest executive residence west of the Mississippi River.

The website offers suggested educational activities and suggested reading.

The mansion is closed for periodic restoration, complicated by fire damage.

Houston Fire Museum [TX]

Description

The Houston Fire Museum presents the history of U.S. firefighting. It is housed in the historic Fire Station No. 7, which was built in 1895. Collection highlights include a 19th-century pumper, an 1895 steamer, and a restored watch office. A new museum building is being added, and will emphasize fire safety.

The museum offers exhibits and guided tours. Reservations are required for group tours.

Casa Navarro State Historic Site [TX]

Description

The half-acre Casa Navarro State Historic Site preserves the restored home of Tejano patriot José Antonio Navarro (1795–1871). Today, visitors can tour Navarro's adobe home furnished with period antiques, read copies of his writing, and discuss questions of history with informed interpreters. Casa Navarro is the only historic site in San Antonio dedicated to the interpretation of the Mexican history and heritage of Texas, as seen through the life of Navarro, a prominent San Antonio merchant, rancher, and statesman. According to the site, "Navarro served as a member of the Texas legislatures under Mexico, the Republic of Texas, and the State of Texas. Representing San Antonio Tejanos, he signed the Texas Declaration of Independence in 1836. Navarro was the first Tejano to write about the history of Texas. He was an influential political figure during the momentous 55 years when the destiny of Texas was forged, from 1810 to 1865. Navarro is best known as 'the strongest defender of the rights of his people.'"

The site offers period rooms, tours, copies of Navarro's writings, and on-site docents.

Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site [TX]

Description

Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site features the modest two-story frame house in the railroad town of Denison where Dwight D. Eisenhower was born in 1890. Eisenhower's father worked for the railroad and the birthplace contains family possessions and period antiques demonstrating the lifestyle of a late 19th-century working family. The site includes six acres of scenic woods and creek bottomland intersected by an abandoned rail track turned into a hiking path. The visitor center is a historic structure filled with hundreds of items relating to Eisenhower and his role in U.S. and world history.
