A collection of 10 exhibits documenting aspects of the local history of Austin, TX. Each exhibit contains approximately 40 images and essays from 1,000 to 3,000 words in length. Topics include working in the city, the suffrage movement, life in the city during World War II, Victorian houses, city streets, the erection of the state capital building, landscaping, the historic suburban Hyde Park area, and memorable "firsts" in Austin.

The site links to the main local history site for the Austin Public Library—the Austin History Center—which provides a 2,400-word student essay on Austin's growth during its first 100 years, a chronology of the city from 1830–1900, and links to other relevant sites, including one presenting hundreds of historic postcards of the city. Useful for those studying Texas, urban, and western history.

French Legation Museum [TX]

Description

The French Legation Museum preserves the historic French Legation, originally built in 1840 to serve as the headquarters for the government of France in the Republic of Texas.

The Legation offers visitors a glimpse into Texas life and culture before it became a state. The Legation also offers guided tours year-round, as well as a variety of special events throughout the year, including lectures and performances. The website offers visitor information, a calendar of events, a brief history of the structure, and an education section which offers lesson plans and activities for students.

Heritage Society of Austin [TX]

Description

The Heritage Society of Austin is dedicated to preserving important historic structures in the greater Austin area. The society has worked over the years to preserve many of Austin's most important structures, and also aids local attractions such as the Pioneer Farms, a living history farm which showcases life in early Texas.

The society offers tours of local historic homes and structures. Pioneer farms offers guided tours, interpretive events, and workshops. The website offers visitor information and a calendar of events.

Texas Historical Foundation [TX]

Description

"The mission of the Texas Historical Foundation (THF) is to serve past, present, and future Texans by supporting research in and publication of Texas history, assisting in the preservation of historic and prehistoric artifacts and information,and raising and providing funds for these purposes in order to recognize and honor past generations and to enrich the awareness of and pride in Texas heritage for present and future generations." Since the mid 1980s, the THF has worked towards influencing state legislation in favor of preservation and has served as a vehicle for funding preservation projects state wide.

The site offers general information about the foundation, current and past issues of the foundation's newsletters, information regarding preservation projects, and an events calendar.

The foundation does not offer a physical site for visitation.
