This collection of essays, commissioned from distinguished scholars, is designed to deepen content knowledge and offer fresh ideas for teaching. Essays begin with a thorough overview of the topic. “Guiding Discussion” offers suggestions on introducing the subject to students, and “Historians Debate” notes secondary sources with varied views on the topic. Notes and additional resources complete each essay. Essays include links to primary sources in the National Humanities Center’s Toolbox Library and are part of the larger TeacherServe project.

Visitors can browse 17 essays, divided into "Native Americans and the Land," "Wilderness and the American Identity," and "The Use of the Land." These focus on the changing ways in which North Americans have related to the natural world and its resources. Topics include, among others, “The Columbian Exchange,” “The Effects of Removal on American Indian Tribes,” “Cities and Suburbs,” and “Environmental Justice for All.”

With its origins in the rising environmental awareness of the 1960s and '70s, Earth Day gives students a chance to consider how human relationships with the natural environment have changed over time. How did pre-colonial and colonial North Americans relate to nature? How were their lives shaped by it? How did the industrial revolution in the U.S. change these relationships? What changes have occurred since then?

Many other organizations also offer Earth Day resources. Here are some ideas to keep you browsing:

  • Discover events and volunteer opportunities nationwide on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Earth Day page.
  • Browse articles, primary source collections, links, and more related to conservation history and present-day science with the Library of Congress's Earth Day reference guide.

Rachel Carson Homestead [PA]

Description

The Rachel Carson Homestead preserves the farmhouse in which Rachel Carson (1907-1964), famed author and environmentalist, was born. Carson is best known for her 1962 book, Silent Spring which cautions against use of chemical pesticides without further research into the ways in which chemicals may alter the environment and/or human health. The site also includes a nature trail and organic garden.

The homestead offers one-hour guided tours of the house and grounds, a 1/4-mile trail with interpretive signage, a garden, summer camps, hands-on educational programs which correspond to state educational standards, and Scout programs. Reservations are required for tours of the house and for all groups of 15 or more. The website offers lesson plans and a suggested reading list.

Grey Towers National Historic Landmark [PA]

Description

The 100-acre Grey Towers National Historic Landmark contains Grey Towers, summer home of Gifford Pinchot (1865-1946), Pennsylvania Governor and first Chief of the U.S. Forest Service. Pinchot is attributed the concepts of conservation and sustainable use. Gifford's wife Cornelia Bryce Pinchot (1881-1960) advocated women's right to vote, child labor reform, and the formation of trade unions. The structure itself was erected in 1886.

The site offers one-hour guided tours of the gardens and the residence's first floor, historic gardens, customizable field trips, environmental outreach programs for students, a 15-minute history interpretive trail, a hands-on forestry trail running less than one mile, a bluebird nestbox trail running 1/4 of a mile, conservation education programs, a trail describing types and uses of trees, and Smokey Bear and forest fire activity backpacks for use on site.

Robinson Jeffers Tor House Foundation [CA]

Description

The Robinson Jeffers Tor House Foundation operates the Tor House and Hawk Tower. The Tor House was built in 1918 through 1919 as the residence of poet Robinson Jeffers (1887-1962) and his family. The property was modeled after English Tudor barns. Jeffers later built the 1924 Hawk Tower for his wife and children. Guests who visited the Jeffers on their land include Sinclair Lewis, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Langston Hughes, Charles Lindbergh, George Gershwin, and Charlie Chaplin. The site also includes an English-style garden. Jeffers's poetry often focused on the Californian coast, and today his work is highly lauded for its environmental consciousness.

The foundation offers tours.

Connecticut Teacher Institute in Environmental History

Description

This teacher institute, presented by the Forest History Society, is especially geared toward Connecticut Social Studies teachers (grades 6–10). Participants will learn more about the Society's If Trees Could Talk curriculum to introduce students to environmental history. Discussion topics, hands-on activities, critical thinking skills, team teaching suggestions for other subjects, and more are included in these free, online modules.

The institute will also introduce The Greatest Good, a U.S. Forest Service Centennial film. Educators will learn to use the film in conjunction with the If Trees Could Talk curriculum and hear from guest speakers on various environmental history topics.
