What It Looks Like

A rich professional development trip incorporates the following elements:

During the program, the project coordinator should take an active role. S/he should evaluate the workshop, help teachers make connections with the material, and model engagement.

  • Connection to larger project goals.
  • Clear linkages between the sites visited—either thematically, chronologically, or methodologically.
  • Active learning for the teachers.
  • Built-in time for reflection.
  • Project-based outcomes. Plan an activity that asks the teachers to share ideas with each other and to incorporate something from the trip into their curriculum.
