Annotated versions of most of the material published by Poe during his lifetime (1809–1849) are presented on these two websites, including at least one example of all surviving poems and tales and in many cases multiple versions. Materials include selections of Poe's literary reviews and essays on a variety of subjects, including aesthetics, dreams, etiquette, and American literature. Also available are autobiographical writings, hundreds of letters, and miscellaneous documents, including a bill of sale for a slave. Bibliographies and an annotated chronology are available.

Merchants House Museum [NY]

The Merchant's House Museum is New York City's only family home preserved intact, both the interior and exterior, from the 19th century. Built in 1832, this red-brick and white-marble late Federal and Greek Revival row house on East Fourth Street was home to a prosperous merchant family for almost 100 years (1835–1933). The façade, with its steeply pitched roof, dormer windows, marble door surround, and elaborate fan light recalls earlier Federal-style homes; while, inside, the formal Greek Revival parlors reflect the latest architectural fashion of the day. The Merchant's House is considered New York City's prime example of a Greek Revival home. Complete with the family's original furnishings and personal possessions, the house offers a rare and intimate glimpse of domestic life during the pivotal era of the 19th century when New York City was transformed from a colonial seaport into a thriving metropolis and the center of U.S. commerce. Three floors and eight period rooms display the possessions of the inhabitants—including their furnishings, clothing, and personal items. The costume collection includes 420 articles of clothing—primarily women’s dresses and their accompanying accessories, such as petticoats, collars, undersleeves, and chemisettes. The majority of the dresses range from 1840–1885, with two examples of 1830s dresses and an extremely rare dress ca. 1813-1815 that is in excellent condition, as well as a rare mid–19th–century corset. The 19th–century rear garden is also open for viewing.

The museum offers self-guided tours, mp3 download or cell phone audio tours, guided house tours on a variety of subjects, guided neighborhood tours, an introductory slide show, docents available to answer questions, an outreach slide show and lecture program, a traditional afternoon tea, period rooms, online exhibits, and the option of friending Gertrude Tredwell (one of the houses residents, 1840–1933) on My Space or Facebook.

Papers of John Jay

This site is a compilation of the unpublished papers of founding father John Jay, dating from 1745 to 1829. It is comprised of nearly 14,000 pages scanned from Jay's manuscripts and related materials. Abstracts and bibliographic notes accompany the scanned images. The primary documents are difficult to read in the original handwriting and they have not yet been transcribed. The quality of some of the images is also poor, although users can enlarge and enhance them. The records are searchable by name of writer, date of composition, name of holding institution, and accession number. Keyword searching of the abstracts, which vary in length and informational detail, is also possible.

Users will find letters from such prominent individuals as John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington. The correspondence deals with New York, anti-slavery, repeal of the Missouri Compromise, international affairs, and state government and politics. Those unfamiliar with Jay and his historical significance should be sure to visit the site's four thematic pages, each containing an essay (500 to 800 words) with links to documents. The site also includes a 1,300-word brief biography and a more than 50 item bibliography of relevant sources.

A PBS companion site for the film The Journey of the Corps of Discovery by Ken Burns. The site contains brief biographies of members of the expedition, historical sketches of the Native American tribes encountered by Lewis and Clark, a semi-searchable selection of transcribed journal excerpts from seven expedition members, over 800 minutes of unedited interviews with scholars and other specialists, over 30 links to related websites, a bibliography, and an interactive story section.

The site also offers teaching resources, including lesson plans and printable activity sheets, as well as a video interview and email forum with filmmaker Ken Burns. An easily navigated site.

This companion site to the 1999 PBS documentary on John Brown uses special features, a timeline, an interactive map, short biographies and histories, and a teacher's guide to explain the story of Brown's life and times. The site offers special features on the Maryland farmhouse where John Brown assembled his men before their raid on Harpers Ferry, the Harpers Ferry firehouse where Brown's raiders were captured, a history of the famous song "John Brown's Body," and a short essay on Brown's failures as a businessman before he became a radical abolitionist. The timeline traces the major events of Brown's life from 1800 to 1865. An interactive map follows Brown's movements across the country from his birth in 1800 to his execution and burial in 1859. The "People and Events" section features short biographical essays on Brown, abolitionist Frederick Douglass, abolitionist newspaper editor James Redpath, writer Henry David Thoreau, 1859 Virginia Governor Henry A. Wise, and "The Secret Six"--the radical abolitionists who funded Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry. The section also features short histories of four events of Brown's radical abolitionist crusades: the Pottawatomie Massacre in Kansas, Brown's Missouri raid, the Harpers Ferry raid, and Brown's hanging. The teacher guide offers discussion questions and four classroom activities.

Researching the Mexican American War

I have to write [on the] Mexican American war. What should I write about?

Answer

Whether you're studying the Mexican-American War or some other historical event, there are several steps you'll want to take.

First, you want to do some background reading and research. Teachinghistory.org is a good place to start. Head to the History Content page and try the Website Reviews and History gateway tabs in the bottom right corner. The History Gateway, for instance, will direct you to a number of good internet resources like PBS's website on the "US-Mexican War" and a website dedicated to the descendants of Mexican War veterans. You might also check out a general history resource like Digital History and see what they have.

After you've gotten a sense of the event, it's time to start thinking about potential writing topics. What's interesting? What's confusing? What's mysterious? What's uncertain? With a war, it's always worth considering why leaders thought it was worth fighting. What did they give as reasons? Were those reasons valid? Were there other, unstated reasons? Did everyone agree, or was there dissent? Remember, history is about using evidence to make arguments—so you'll want to make sure that you have evidence to support any claim you make. Try gathering some primary documents to find evidence for your answers. Head to any number of primary source repositories on the web for primary sources and you'll eventually find something like this collection of documents from the Library of Congress. It should give you fodder for thinking about how President Polk rallied support behind the war cause and other important issues relevant to the Mexican-American War.

Savannah Images Project

This site, funded by the Georgia Humanities Council and the National Endowment for Humanities, is part of a project that involves teachers and students in historical study by investigating local history and helps them develop technology skills by conducting historical research. The site features more than 300 images of places and events in Savannah and coastal Georgia divided into 17 subjects, such as "First Baptist Church of Savannah", "Fortresses of Savannah," and "James Oglethorpe and the Native Americans". Each topic offers a 750-2500 word essay written by Armstrong Atlantic State University students and professors. Because the authors' levels of expertise vary, the essays are of uneven quality and length. Some essays have links to specific images and bibliographies of suggested scholarly readings. Images offer brief (10-20 word) descriptive captions. This site is ideal for those interested in the history of Savannah and coastal Georgia, and it would also be a useful model for similar local history projects at the high school and college level.
