This website presents 65 moving images from 1915 through the 21st century. These include home movies, industrial films, news coverage, and documentaries, and cover a wide variety of topics, with a special focus on life in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska.

Several home videos capture the experience of attending the 1962 Seattle World's Fair—riding the monorail or looking at the Space Needle.

Visitors can also watch as U.S. Presidents made history in this region, including John F. Kennedy's groundbreaking of the N-reactor at Hanford Nuclear Reservation, and President Truman awarding the Congressional Medal of Honor to Bud Hawk.

A four-minute video captures a traditional Eskimo dance in Point Barrow, AK, in the early 1940s.

All movies can be browsed by year or by subject (e.g. trash, wildlife, workers, football, hiking, poverty, fisheries, laboratories, Rainier), and are keyword searchable.

Architect of the Capitol

According to the official website, the Architect of the Capitol "is responsible to the United States Congress for the maintenance, operation, development, and preservation of 16.5 million square feet of buildings and more than 450 acres of land throughout the Capitol complex. This includes the House and Senate office buildings, the Capitol, Capitol Visitor Center, the Library of Congress buildings, the Supreme Court building, the U.S. Botanic Garden, the Capitol Power Plant, and other facilities."

The educational offerings of the Architect of the Capitol largely come in the form of text "snippets" addressing different buildings and architectural features in the Capitol Campus, Washington, DC. Under architecture, you can look through a list of architectural features of the capitol building. Click on one for a brief history of the dome, crypt, rotunda, or other features. The art section offers the same for the murals, portraits, reliefs, and sculptures in the Capitol Campus. Finally, FAQs offer a selection of data from building materials to architectural symbolism.

Sound like a nice collection of trivia? Consider it as an alternative way to teach the social aspects of government. How do the buildings of the Capitol Campus display period concepts of the ideal U.S.A.? How do they fit the needs of the demographic which would have used them at the time of their building? Do the materials or structures speak to the power or influence of any particular individuals, families, or industries?

Geo-Literacy Project: Students Explore Their World

Edutopia's Geo-Literacy Project is an interdisciplinary, project-based, approach to teaching local history that can be adapted for different locations. The goal of the project was to develop students' literacies. Throughout the project, students were guided by the essential question, why is the preservation of a local historical site—in this case, Rush Ranch—important? They explored the site from a number of perspectives, working with local experts and community partners to understand the local environment. They then built websites using primary sources, images, videos, and student-created reports. Older students helped them prepare the content for this website and use the technologies. Specifically, this project demonstrates two promising practices:

  • Using local history resources and issues to engage and challenge students.
  • Using technologies in the history/social studies classroom to further learning
Throughout the extensive project, students were investigating, using primary sources of information, problem solving, and finally, communicating their findings.
What's Notable?

This project-based approach teaches students to think about how the past relates to their own lives and how geography, geology, and history interact. Further, because the project asks students to present their findings through multimedia, web-based accounts, the project presents an opportunity to meaningfully use technology in the history/social studies classroom and share what they have learned with a larger audience.

Presidential Patent

Was Abraham Lincoln the only president with a patent?

Answer

Many presidents have been intensely interested in science, technology, and invention. Early presidents signed the certificates that the Patent Office issued, and collectors of these certificates sometimes refer to them as "Presidential patents." But Abraham Lincoln was the only president to receive a patent himself.

Lincoln's Patented Device

Congressman Lincoln received Patent #6469 for "A Device for Buoying Vessels Over Shoals" on May 22, 1849. It was a set of inflatable bellows that attached to each side of the hull of a flatboat and that could be inflated by a windlass connected with upright poles to the bellows if the ship was about to run aground in shallow water. The idea was to increase the buoyancy of the flatboat and make it draw less water. It was never marketed. Unfortunately, its added weight when it was not inflated made the ship lie lower in the water, which, in turn, made the vessel more likely to run aground in the first place. The Smithsonian's Museum of American History displays the model of the invention that Lincoln had to submit along with his patent application. The model "looks as if it had been whittled with a knife out of a shingle and a cigar box," as one account describes it. The Museum's excellent blog entry for November 29, 2009, discusses the patent in the larger context of U.S. presidents' interest in invention. It also links to the museum's rich online exhibit, "Abraham Lincoln: An Extraordinary Life," one section of which "A Would-be Inventor" thoroughly documents Lincoln's patent.

Lincoln's Flatboat Adventure

Lincoln's patent application was almost certainly the result of a problem he had encountered years before when he was piloting a flatboat. Lincoln made two long trips by flatboat, one in 1828 when he was 19 and one in 1831 when he was 22. There was no problem with the boat on the 1828 trip, when he and another man, Allen Gentry, piloted a flatboat from Rockport, Indiana, down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers carrying produce from Gentry's father's store to New Orleans. Lincoln was paid $8 a month (for 3 months) and given passage home on a steamboat.

Lincoln's patent application was almost certainly the result of a problem he had encountered years before when he was piloting a flatboat.

His second trip, however, was more eventful. In the spring of 1831, a business entrepreneur from Springfield, Illinois, Denton Offut, hired Lincoln and two other men to take a flatboat from Old Sangamon town on the Sangamon River, near Springfield, to New Orleans. Offut could find no available boat in the area, so he hired Lincoln and the others to fell timber and build a boat which took them a month. They loaded it with produce and launched it. When they reached the little village of New Salem, 20 miles downstream, a drama unfolded, as Ida Tarbell later described it:

"At the village of New Salem there was a mill-dam. On it the boat stuck, and here for nearly twenty-four hours it hung, the bow in the air and the stern in the water, the cargo slowly setting backward [as it took on water]—shipwreck almost certain. The village of New Salem turned out in a body to see what the strangers would do in their predicament. They shouted, suggested, and advised for a time, but finally discovered that one big fellow in the crew was ignoring them and working out a plan of relief. Having unloaded the cargo into a neighboring boat, Lincoln succeeded in tilting his craft. By boring a hole in the end extending over the dam the water was let out. This done, the boat was easily shoved over and reloaded. The ingenuity which he had exercised in saving his boat made a deep impression on the crowd on the bank. It was talked over for many a day, and the general verdict was that the 'bow-hand' was a 'strapper.'"

The National Park Service "Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial" explanation of flatboats.

Spencer County, Indiana, in 2008, sponsored a goodwill recreation of Lincoln's 1828 flatboat journey with a 26-day trip down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers from Rockport, Indiana, to New Orleans, on a reconstructed flatboat in an event it called "Lincoln's Journey of Remembrance" as part of the national celebration of the centennial of Lincoln's birth. One of the participants posted a blog of the trip.

Team Ships

Team Ships (the Navy's Program Executive Office, Ships) was founded in late 2002 to manage construction and design of U.S. military vessels.

The site of Team Ships was obviously not designed for educators so much as for providing basic awareness of the office and its various vessel classes (likely intended primarily for military enthusiasts or marine hobbyists). However, there is one small section which may be of interest to you for your professional purposes.

Shipping, for transportation of goods and people, is crucial to American history. By extension, the shipbuilding trade was similarly imperative. However, few, if any, textbooks cover the process of shipbuilding. Team Ships' site's strength is that it offers a very basic overview of the general steps in creating a maritime vessel within the U.S. military system. (The individual steps are linked in the right hand navigation bar.) Many students are interested in World War Two land vehicles, ships, and planes. Why not offer them a hook by talking about shipbuilding in the Navy?

Tennessee Valley Authority

In 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt initiated a new agency which combined aspects of governmental and private organizations. Over time, the resulting agency, the Tennessee Valley Authority or TVA, has researched issues as far-ranging as malaria, reforestation, power, flooding, navigation, and erosion. In their own words, the TVA serves the "valley through energy, environment, and economic development."

Admittedly, the TVA website was not designed for K-12 education. However, as a major initiative of the New Deal, it is an important milestone in U.S. history. For that reason, if you need to teach the New Deal, you may want to read From the New Deal to the a New Century: A Short History of TVA, which includes a link to the original TVA Act. The TVA Heritage archive focuses on more specific snippets of TVA history.

Also worth a look is the TVA kids' site, which includes answers to questions like "Who developed the Cherokee alphabet?" and "In 1930, how many Americans living on farms had electricity?" Resources specifically developed for teachers lean toward the sciences.

The Social Museum Collection at Harvard University

Harvard University's Social Museum was established in 1903 as part of the University's newly-formed Department of Social Ethics, devoted to the comparative study of social conditions and institutions in the United States and abroad. This website presents more than 6,000 images from the Social Museum's collection, including photographs, pamphlets, prints, and architectural drawings. Images are available though an extensive search function, with a keyword search, artist list (including photographers Lewis Hine and Francis Benjamin Johnston), and 37 topics (e.g. anarchism, charity, government, health, education, housing, Socialism, and war). Also available is an online exhibit that introduces three of the Social Museum's primary subjects of study: Poor Relief, Social Justice, and Industrial Betterment. This section can serve as an introduction for those unfamiliar with the progressive era and early 20th-century social reform movements in the United States and abroad.

U.S. Congressional Serial Set, 1817-1994

[SUBSCRIPTION REQUIRED] This vast archive includes many documents and reports produced by the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives and published between 1817 and 1980, for a total of more than 355,000 items. These items include 48,000 maps, 9,000 illustrations, thousands of reports, and numerous records of committee hearings and floor proceedings. All items are full-text searchable and can be browsed by subject, such as education, economics, food and agriculture, health, Indian affairs, armed forces and conflicts, environment and natural resources, and social issues. Within each of these broad categories, there are hundreds of subject headings, such as "animal welfare" (83 items), "alien labor" (306 items), and "ordnance testing" (353 items). The "Indian Affairs" category, for example, presents thousands of items on agencies and organizations relating to Indian affairs, Indian reservations, treaties, names of Indian tribes, as well as documents relating to hundreds of laws and supreme court cases. There is also a bill number search, an alphabetical list of names of all acts of Congress, and a listing of all documents by U.S. Congress session. All documents can be downloaded in PDF format. In addition, a separate browse feature entitled "Serial Set Maps" facilitates access to thousands of maps from counties and cities across the country. Many of these date to the Civil War-era or later and include images of forts and depictions of field operations. Readex plans to expand coverage through 1994.

Platte River Basin in Nebraska

The Platte River begins in the Rocky Mountains and flows the length of central Nebraska before emptying into the Missouri River to the east. This website provides 40 diverse documents about the history, geology, and hydrology of the Platte River, ranging in date from an 1843 report by the U.S. Secretary of War entitled "An Exploration of the Country Lying Between the Missouri River and the Rocky Mountains," to a 302-page report published in 1993 by the Nebraska Geological Survey entitled, "Flat Water: A History of Nebraska and Its Water." The majority of documents date to the 1970s, many of which were published by government agencies such as the Missouri River Basin Commission or the U.S. Department of the Interior Geological Survey, detailing investigations into ground water usage and water resources management. There are also several documents on legal issues surrounding water rights and outdoor recreation. These materials are accompanied by 13 links to websites offering information about water resources, including the University of Nebraska's Water Center and Water Sciences Laboratory, as well as the Missouri River Basin Project, created to plan for the conservation and use of Missouri River water resources. Especially useful for those interested in the history of development projects surrounding water resources.

Early American Newspapers: Series 1, 1690-1876

[SUBSCRIPTION REQUIRED] This archive provides full-text access to more than 350,000 issues of more than 700 newspapers from 23 states and the District of Columbia. The majority of the collection focuses on the 18th and 19th centuries, and sheds light onto a wide range of political, social, cultural, and economic issues in both cities and smaller communities. The New York collection, for example, boasts 157 titles. While 80 of these were published in New York City, the collection also includes newspapers published in Troy, Utica, Catskill, and Ithaca. Massachusetts (137 titles), Pennsylvania (84 titles), Connecticut (47 titles), and Vermont (41 titles) are also well represented, followed by New Hampshire, Maryland, Virginia, South Carolina, and Rhode Island. Keyword searching capabilities combined with extensive browsing options allow both experienced researchers and those largely unfamiliar with early American history to make good use of the resources available here. Browsing options include dates and eras, article types (including news; poetry/songs; advertisements; birth, death, and marriage notices; cartoons and illustrations; maps; letters; and election returns), languages, places of publication, and newspaper titles.
